Pet Costs over their lifetime

Here is a very interesting article via @visualeconomics about the average costs in the US of owning different pets. Some of the moreВ interestingВ factoids:

  1. The bigger the dog the higher the cost - $5,980 for a small dog, vs. $7,800 for a big one
  2. Cats are more expensive than dogs – cats come out at $7,640 almost as much as a big dog
  3. Fish live long and are the least expensive – В I am yet to see a fish that lives 10 years, however they are reported to be the least expensive at $500 over their life time
  4. A Cockatoo can out live you - with a crazy $52,250, mostly because they can live close to 50 years! Not something I would consider buying for the kids.
